  7. Easy warm-up exercise for drawing

    This drawing warm-up exercise, by artist Judy Salleh, is a good way to improve your observation skills. Using recycled cardboard, art markers and coloured pencils, Judy shows how it is an easy technique you could practice very week

    1. Toned paper - try a mid tone grey paper, to easily seek out the lights and darks

    2. Doodle - draw as many objects as you can in 5 minutes

    Church Point sketch process:

    • I used my phone to draw a frame for the image and managed to wobble that on the bottom line, but hey it's just a sketch, so what does it matter!
    • I normally sketch the big shapes first or otherwise if there is an object in front of my main image then I need to draw that first - in this case it was the table and umbrella
    • I then roughly placed in the wall and flower bed on the left, adding details later
