TACHIKAWA

Flex nibs for thin lines

Tachikawa & Co., Ltd. was founded in 1935 in Japan, and is best known for their high-quality comic nibs, nib holders, dip pens and other drawing supplies. Most popular is the expressive G nib with a pointed tip and g-shaped slits, that allow the nib to flex under hand pressure, to produce dramatic line variation. For more traditional calligraphy, you can try the reservoir nibs that require less frequent dipping – Type A is a square shape tip for sketching and beginner calligraphers; Type C is a rectangle shape, used to produce crisp lines for scripts. Nibs are chrome plated to minimise rusting and sharp edged for crisper lines. Each nib requires a nib holder and most people use a straight dip pen holder and rotate the paper to write, or right handers might prefer an right-leaning holder (oblique) that makes it easier to keep the nib parallel to the slope of the desired writing. Glass dip pens which range from functional tools to works of art, allow you to dip into any ink, change inks easily and produce more tonal variation from the less regular flow of ink along the grooves in the glass. All dips pens work best on fine grain manga or watercolour paper.
