Gouache

Gouache

Gouache is an opaque paint composed of pigment, water and a binding agent like gum arabic. It dries to a matte finish, is water-soluble, and can be used on paper, cardboard and canvas. Gouache is popular in illustration, urban sketching and hand lettering due to its vibrant colour and ability to correct errors with subsequent layers. We favour Daniel Smith artist grade gouache which achieves opacity through high pigment load and without adding white or other fillers. Use straight for full bodied colour, dilute for hazy layers or as an accent over watercolour. Gouache dries fast, making it convenient for layering, but it can also be reactivated. Gouache wrinkles paper less and provides texture for you to add further layers with POSCA pens, pen & ink or waterproof markers. Best used with stiff brush fibres such as golden synthetics.
