Set up with a Sable for the best point and control and a soft Squirrel for even skies and washes. Both fibres types are also available in modern synthetics if you prefer a vegan option. The two most popular models for travel sketching are ROSEMARY & CO R2 Pure Kolinsky Sable round size 8 and ROSEMARY & CO R9 Pure Squirrel. Or you can do it with just one brush, a Dagger which has a point and an edge, that you flip between as you paint. Most popular for traditional watercolour are NEVSKAYA PALITRA Squirrel (size 6 or 7 for beginner), the bigger bellied ROSEMARY & Co Series 170 Size 0 or the well priced SEAWHITE Sable brushes made in Germany. To preserve your best brushes, only use to pull pigment across the page. Rinse promptly in clean water. Avoid using with oil paint, acrylics, artist inks, masking fluid or to drill paint out of dry pans. Store flat, never point up or resting on the point. Your aim is to protect the point and to keep pigment and moisture out of the metal ferrule and handle.
