Mechanical Pencil
A mechanical pencil provides a consistent sized graphite lead without the need for sharpening. Available in different lead diametres, mechanical pencils are used for precision work (~0.3 to 0.5mm), general writing and drawing (~0.5 to 0.7mm) or loose sketching (~0.9 to 5.6mm). Automatic mechanical pencils use a ratchet to advance the lead a set amount on each click and suit precision and general work. They often include an eraser under the push button that can be replaced once worn. Some models have a rigid metal sleeve to protect the lead from the ruler when drafting. Clutch pencils (also known as lead holders) have a jaw that opens to allow the lead to slide more freely. Clutch pencils usually have larger diametre leads and are held further back for more sweeping strokes and shading. Rotating these wider leads will keep them sharp, but you can use a sharpener or sandpaper to create a point. Mechanical pencils can be refilled with any lead brand, as long as the diametre is correct. You can choose the lead hardness, with firmer leads more common in mechanical pencils (firmest 2H to B) and softer, blacker leads in clutch pencils (B through to 7B which is the softest and darkest).
