This is the abrasive we use to smooth fountain pen nibs. With the nib well tuned and inked (or wet with water), draw figure 8 and infinity signs on the sheet, taking care to roll the nib a little on each pass to avoid creating a flat foot on the nib. For most jobs, the 8000 grade is used for about 3 passes in the horizontal and 3 in the vertical, then finished with the 12000 grade pad. For minor nib feedback, the 12000 grade alone is usually enough. The 12000 grade is also back with padding that provides a softer surface to work in to. Check your work frequently as it is very easy to over polish the nib, widening the line size and losing the round shape of the tipping. Practice on a cheap stainless steel nib before you attempt polishing a gold nib. Micro-Mesh technical: Originally developed for the restoration in fine arts to remove layers of contamination without damaging the underlying original work. Unlike sandpaper where the abrasive crystals stand up, the crystals on micro mesh are cushioned to give a more uniform, softer approach to the smoothing process. This approach generate less heat and helps the pad last for longer.
