Ink Science

Using a fountain pen is like a giant experiment. You are trying to find the perfect pen, ink and paper, for your hand. When researching inks, it is easy to choose colour, but harder to find out about flow. Reviews can be contradictory, because flow also depends on what pen (nib, feed) was used for the review.

We take the mystery out of ink flow with our ink science. Using micro capillaries, we measure the flow of each ink brand outside of the pen. The rise of ink in the capillary relates to whether the ink is high, medium or low flow, and the tests results are consistent with what we experience in our own pens.

You can filter the info on our site and use the science to fine tune your own pen set-ups. Use a high flow ink to improve a dry writing pen or if you are trying to widen the line width of a particular nib. Use a low flow ink to improve drying time on the page (good for left handers or if paper quality is low) or if you want to try and narrow the line width of a nib. The differences are subtle, but once you start doing your own experiments you will see it is worth it. Just remember to only change one variable at a time.
