FABER-CASTELL Pitt Pastel Pencils available in singles in the colours you will find useful for portraiture.
These are excellent quality, with thick 4.3mm pastel leads and excellent light-fastness. Can be wiped with a finger, paper or brush. Best to sharpen pastel pencils with a sharp knife blade.
