Artist grade watercolour paper, made on a cylinder mould, with 100% cotton fibres. Surface is rough (textured) to suit traditional or expressive watercolour. Block format glued on all four edges to keep paper flat while wet. One of the strongest papers. Made in France. More info below.
ARCHES Watercolour is a premium paper made in France from 100% cotton.
Available in 3 finishes - rough, medium (cold press) and smooth (hot press).
Available in 2 paper weights - 185gsm and 300gsm.
Best formats for travel sketching are pads (which are gummed on the short side) or blocks (gummed on 4 sides).
Beginners watercolour can go for the medium surface in A5 or A4 and 300gsm which gives some texture for the paint to grab. Beginner colour pencil artists will like the medium in the lighter 185gsm. For pen & ink or sketching, try the smoother hot press surface in either weight. Rough is great for texture but not for details.
The block format holds the paper in shape. The glue edge is black and colour and remains that colour after separation. Blocks cost more but you get more sheets!
