A dip nib unlike any other

Kakimori Metal Dip Pen Nib reinvents the traditional dip nib with a beautifully engineered solid brass conical nib that produces fine lines when used vertically and wider lines as the pen angle is lowered. Whether you're testing fountain pen inks, creating expressive lettering, or filling pages of a travel sketchbook, this nib offers a simple and playful way to enjoy bottled ink.

What sets it apart

  • Precision machined solid brass conical nib
  • Fine lines when held upright and broader strokes at lower writing angles
  • Holds far more ink than a traditional pointed dip nib
  • Ideal for handwriting, illustration, ink testing, swatching and calligraphy
  • Easier to clean than almost any other writing tool

Feel in the hand

Expressive. If you like trying different inks, this is one of the easiest tools to reach for. Simply dip, test, rinse and repeat.

Who it's for

  • Ink explorers trying different inks
  • Fountain pen enthusiasts, for sampling inks before filling a pen
  • Urban sketchers want a range of strokes from detailed to broad
  • Hand letters after a smoother feel than a pointed dip nib
  • Lovers of beautiful tools

Not for

  • Those wanting a flexible nib for Copperplate or Spencerian calligraphy
  • Anyone looking for an everyday replacement for a fountain pen
  • Long journaling sessions
  • Poor quality paper, as initial strokes are often quite wet

Practical tips

  • Expect a learning curve to find the best writing angle, how deeply to dip and when to rotate the nib as ink runs low.
  • When removing the nib from the nib holder, gently pull it out while turning to avoid dislodging the nib mount.

FAQs

Can I use fountain pen ink?
Yes. It works with fountain pen ink and most other artist inks, making it an excellent tool for sampling and comparing colours without the need to clean a fountain pen.

Should I get the brass or steel nib?
We find the brass nib smoother. The steel version is finer and not as popular.

Is it better than a glass dip pen?
Many owners who have both prefer the Kakimori. The brass nib won't break if dropped, it's smoother than inexpensive glass pens and you can write and swatch with the same nib.

What's the benefit over a traditional dip nib?
Compared to traditional steep dip nibs, the Kakimori needs dipping much less often.

Does it flex like a calligraphy nib?
No. Line variation comes from the writing angle rather than pressure, giving you smooth, consistent control.

Will the brass tarnish?
Yes. The brass gradually develops a natural patina through use, while maintaining its writing performance. Rinse promptly if using pigmented inks to prevent staining.

Does it include a pen holder?
No. This listing is for the brass nib only. A compatible nib holder is required.
