Custom 823 is one of the most popular pens in the Pilot gold nib fountain pen range.

Fitted with a size #15 14K gold nib, there is enough nib length that you barely need to move your hand for the pen to reach the page. Combined with the vacuum filling mechanism and high ink capacity, this model is designed to be a workhorse. Fill it up and you will be writing for many weeks before needing to refill.

A shut off value that sits between the main barrel and grip section allows you to shut off the ink flow by closing the end knob to the closed position. A useful feature for air travel or even when transporting your pen between home and work etc.

The demonstrator barrel and cap allows you to see the remaining ink, reminding you when refilling is required, but also just a delight to view the ink moving around as you use the pen.

Available in translucent brown, translucent black and clear, with gold trim. The brown has more translucency than the black.

Nibs are well tuned straight out of the box, however we recommend our free nib tuning service as it is worth checking the feed is sitting exactly square on the nib to ensure good ink flow to the large nib.

Nib sizes available include EF (0.25mm), F (0.3mm), M (0.5mm), B (0.6mm), Signature (0.7mm vertical stroke), Coarse (0.85mm), and sometimes we also have the FA modern flex nib with it's two cut outs to provide flex and line variation (0.3-0.8mm) with downward hand pressure. Spare nibs are not readily available, so please contact us if you need help with nib width selection.

Fill the pen by extending the vacuum rod to it's full length, submerging the nib well into the ink and depressing the rod to draw the ink up into the barrel. If you are new to vacuum fillers, for the first use, fill the pen with water to get experience in how the mechanism works. Please note on new pens, grease that lubricates the movement of the mechanism will be visible inside the barrel and will spread out over time.

We recommend using Pilot Iroshizuku ink, known for flow, to help the feed keep up with your speed of writing. Pen is supplied in either the Pilot Gift box with free 70mL black ink or a Pilot standard gift box.

Before use, with the nib pointing up, unscrew the end knob 2mm to allow the ink to flow.

As with any resin pen, avoid repeated disassembly or over tightening of the cap or other parts.  Flushing the pen with tap water should be sufficient to clean the pen between changing ink colours.
