TWSBI Diamond 580 Fountain Pen - Clear
Makes the act of writing visible
The TWSBI Diamond 580 Clear is a traditional piston filler stripped back to show you everything inside the pen. Seeing the workings and ink movement turns your writing into something you actually engage with. Built on TWSBI's reliable piston mechanism, smooth 580 nib, and a body that's lighter than the rest of the Diamond 580 range, it's one of our most popular pens for long copy writing.
What sets it apart
- Full demonstrator design, showing ink colour, movement and level
- Comfortable grip section (narrower than Eco) for long writing sessions
- Reliable TWSBI piston, with double the capacity of converter pens
- Cartridge-free, but still easy to use
- Designed to be disassembled, giving you control over maintenance
- Screw off nib unit, for easy nib changes, from EF to Stub options
Feel in the hand
When you can see more of what's happening, filling the pen turns into a ritual that helps you start your writing session. The ink becomes part of the setting up, not just the writing output. You will feel the ink setting your mood.
Who it's for
- People upgrading from entry level fountain pens like Eco
- People planning to use their pen for long writing sessions
- Ink explorers who want to see more of their ink
- Writers who enjoy mechanical interaction with their tools
- Anyone trying to build a daily writing practice
Not for
- People who prefer opaque designs that hide the ink and any splatters
-
Users who want zero maintenance
- Heavy handed users who need an indestructible pen design
Practical tips
- If you spill ink in the pen cap, use an elastic band wrapped around the end of a pencil to "fish" out the inner cap for cleaning
FAQs
Is this beginner-friendly?
Yes, you dial in the ink at a controlled pace, and will be writing for a couple of weeks before you have to refill. The pen box includes filling instructions.
How much ink does it hold?
The chamber can hold up to 1.9mL, which is 2-3 times a cartridge or converter.
How does it compare to Twsbi Eco?
Diamond 580 is the everyday writer, with a more comfortable grip and screw of nib units. Eco is the "economy" model with a friction fit nib and a simpler aesthetic.
What's the difference between 580, 580AL and 580ALR?
The 580 is the base model of the Diamond series. The 580AL upgrade includes more aluminium parts and the 580ALR also includes ribbing on the grip. Most new releases are in ALR.
Can you change nibs?
Yes, the nib unit is replaceable and can be changed on the pen even when the pen is inked.
Does it come with ink?
No, bottled ink is required. You can use any bottle ink labelled suitable for fountain pens.
Does it break easily?
No, not with the right care. Avoid over tightening the cap during daily use and minimise how often you disassemble the pen.Â
How do you clean it?
Routine cleaning only requires you to expel the old ink and cycle water through the nib/barrel a few times before refilling. Disassembly for piston regreasing is only needed long term, and only if the piston becomes stiff.
