FAQs

Is this the same functionality as the older Realo?
No. This is a redesigned model with a new piston mechanism, higher ink capacity (~1.5mL), and modular nib compatibility features. The ink capacity improvement makes sense for the Zoom and Music nibs.

How does ink capacity compare to other piston fillers?
Sailor Realo (~1.5mL), Pelikan M800 (~1.7mL), Pilot Heritage 92 (~1.2mL), Lamy 2000 (~2mL), Twsbi 580 (~1.9mL), Twsbi Eco (~1.8mL). For comparison, cartridges are typically 0.5-0.8mL and the Sailor standard converter is 0.5mL.

Is it the same size as the original Realo?
The new pen is longer at 150.5mm (capped) versus 141mm for the original model.

Can I swap nibs?
Yes, this model introduces a compatible nib/section interchange system, allowing Sailor nib units to be moved between other large barrel designs such as 1911 Large and Professional Gear. Not compatible with King of Pen sections or the slimmer pen models such as 1911 Standard, Prof Gear Slim and PG Mini.

Is this a new nib?
It retains Sailor’s original nib design for Realo, but is now 18k gold instead of 21K. Technically this may translate to less bounce and greater precision of line width. 

Why is the grip "pinched in"?
This waist guides where the pen should be gripped, and may be a design choice to support the internal mechanics and/or to match the more controlled feel of Sailor nibs.
