For people who think better on paper

The Pilot Custom 823 is the sort of pen that naturally becomes part of your daily routine. The 14K nib is smooth without feeling overly soft, the weight sits comfortably in the hand, and the large ink capacity means you rarely have to think about refilling. It’s a pen for longer writing sessions and quieter, more focused moments on the page.

What sets it apart

  • Smooth, wet 14K nib that writes with almost no effort
  • Vacuum filling system with huge ink capacity for long uninterrupted sessions
  • Transparent body lets you monitor the ink level inside the barrel
  • Ink shut-off valve for travel, but also makes the writing process feel more intentional

Feel in the hand

The Custom 823 has a way of making you want to keep writing. The nib feels smooth and effortless on the page, and the ink capacity means you can write for long stretches without interruption. It has some heft from the vacuum mechanism, but the balance is steady. It’s the kind of pen people reach for when they want to think through an idea more deeply.

Who it’s for

  • Writers trying to build a consistent daily habit
  • Professionals who genuinely think better on paper

  • Writers happy to stay with one ink for extended periods

Not for

  • Writers who constantly rotate inks and clean pens frequently
  • People who prefer ultra light or minimalist pens
  • Heavy handed writers

Practical tips

  • Unscrew the blind cap slightly before writing so ink can flow properly
  • Tighten the blind cap again before travel
  • Avoid over-tightening the cap or fully disassembling the pen unnecessarily

FAQs

What makes the Pilot Custom 823 special?
We think it’s the combination of the large smooth nib, ink capacity and barrel translucency. The 823 makes it very easy to settle into your writing.

What's the difference between Custom 823 and 743?
They share the same nib design, but the 743 has a wider range of nib sizes, an opaque body, and fills via a cartridge/converter system. The 743 is more popular for users who frequently change ink colour.

How does the 823 vacuum filling work?
Extend the filling rod slowly and push down quickly with the nib submerged in the ink. The vacuum system fills quickly and holds enough ink to last a few weeks.

Can I change inks frequently with this pen?
Yes, but not as easily as with a cartridge/converter pen.

How do I clean the pen?
Empty the pen and draw up water a few times to clear out most of the original ink. There's no need to disassemble the section or barrel for routine cleaning.

Is it good for everyday writing?
Yes. A lot of people use the 823 for journaling, professional writing, quick notes and long sessions at the desk.

Does the large ink capacity lead to leaks?
No, when the shut-off valve is closed, the ink in the body can not reach the feed. There will be some residual ink in the feed you can use for a short period before needing to reopen the valve.

Which nib size is the most popular?
The sweet spot for the round nibs is between Fine (0.4mm) and Medium (0.5mm).

Is it heavy?
It’s not overly heavy, but it feels more substantial than lightweight resin pens because of the metal rod inside the barrel.

Why doesn't my 823 write?
Check you've loosened the blind cap to release the ink shut-off valve.
