A pen to form part of your everyday rhythm

Some pens are beautiful to look at. The Pelikan Souverän M800 and M805 are beautiful to write with. Designed in Germany and refined over decades, these pens combine Pelikan’s legendary piston filling system, an exceptional 18ct gold nib and a perfectly balanced size that makes them ideal for everyday writing. This is a fountain pen for people who believe the tools we use influence the way we think and write.

What sets it apart

  • The original piston filling system: with generous ink capacity and smooth operation; for less waste, more choice and the pleasure of using beautiful inks every day.
  • Premium gold nib: hand finished 18ct gold nib, plated with rhodium on the M805 for a sophisticated silver tone appearance. Smooth, expressive, generous line.
  • Full size feel: large, but not oversized, and the brass piston adds enough heft for presence.
  • Air tight cap: a pen that always writes when you pick it up
  • A modern classic: Its distinctive striped barrel and timeless styling have made it a favourite among writers, professionals and collectors.

Feel in the hand

The M800/M805 is the second largest in the range, offering balance between presence and comfort. It feels substantial without becoming tiring, making it ideal for long writing sessions and journaling.

Who it's for

  • Writers looking for a lifelong fountain pen
  • Professionals wanting a refined everyday pen
  • Journalers who appreciate smooth, generous ink flow
  • Enthusiasts ready to invest in a premium German pen
  • Anyone who enjoys the ritual of filling a pen from a bottle of ink

Not for

  • Users who find wet or broad nibs unsuitable for their paper choice
  • Those who prefer a very lightweight fountain pen
  • If you write extremely small and need a very fine, precise line
  • Prefer disposable cartridges for convenience
  • Want a compact pen for small notebooks or planners

For a smaller, lighter pen, the Pelikan M600/605 series is fitted with a plastic piston for less back weight, but can also be used posted to extend the pen length.

Practical tips

  • Pelikan nibs generally write broader and wetter than many Japanese fountain pens. If you have small handwriting, consider Fine or Extra Fine.

FAQs

Is this pen big?
It is a full size pen that sits between the oversized M1000, and the smaller M600. Most customers use the pen without the cap posted, and describe it as the sweet spot for everyday writing.

How does M800/805 compare to Pilot Custom 823?
These pens are similar size pens, with the Pilot providing a more precise, restrained writing feel typical of Japanese nibs, and the Pelikan with its wetter ink flow, feels more expressive.

What is the difference between the M800 and M805?
The writing experience is identical. Both are fitted with an 18K gold nib. The only difference is the trim colour.

Is there an ink window?
It varies by model, but in the core range, the all black pens usually include an ink window. Older production models previously included ink visibility between the stripes of the barrel, but this is no longer available on new stock (except for M400 Tortoiseshell and some special editions).

What nib size should I buy?
Pelikan nibs are wider than most other brands and most customers either buy a size narrower than their favourite Euro fountain pen or go wide with a Broad, or Italic Broad nib.

Can Pelikan pens be serviced?
Yes. Pelikan pens are designed to be maintained and serviced, making them excellent long term writing companions. Replacement nib units are available and we can help you with regreasing of the piston if required.
