Feel in the hand
You start paying attention to details you would normally walk past.
Sketching slows things down in a useful way. Not dramatically, just enough to notice light, shapes, movement, and small moments during the day.
Over time, carrying a pen starts turning into a habit.

FAQs
Do I need to be good at drawing? No. The focus is observation, not perfect sketches.
Will it leak? Usually not. Avoid leaving it in extreme heat or over tightening the cap.
Can I travel with it? Yes. For flights, either fill it completely or empty it, and store it nib up.
What nib size is best for sketching? Fine is the best all-rounder. Extra Fine suits detailed work, while Medium gives a looser, more expressive line.
Are spare nibs available? Yes.
What are the tools for? There's a wrench and silicone grease to help you service the piston, if required a few years down the track.
How do I clean it? Flush with water every couple of months or if you change ink colour.Â
What if the nib feels dry? A quick rinse or dip in water usually fixes it. Regular use also helps keep ink flowing smoothly.
What's the best paper? Smooth sketchbook paper works best. We like Stillman & Birn Alpha.
Can I use other inks? Yes. Any bottled fountain pen ink will work. For waterproof drawing ink, De Atramentis is one of our favourites.
What about the Sailor Fude Kit? The Sailor Fude uses a bent nib for dramatic line variation. The TWSBI Eco is more straightforward and beginner friendly, especially if you also want a pen for normal writing.
What else should I carry in a simple outdoor kit? See our Urban Sketching Kit.Â
