Best gold nib pens (top 7)

Gold nib pens provide a softer, more luxurious feel over stainless steel nibs. These are the time tested models that most pen lovers will have tried or added to their collection:

1. Pilot Capless: A push-button operated, retractable 18K nib, for quick note-taking. Also available in the slimmer barrel Capless Decimo (blue pen shown) and the twist operated Capless Fermo. All Capless models have a metal body and are supplied with the Converter 40, 0.6mL.

2. Pilot Custom 823: Known for its large 14K nib, smooth writing experience, large 2.5mL ink capacity and translucent body, this is Jen's favourite gold nib pen. The nib reaches the page with you barely needing to move your hand. Fast vacuum-filling mechanism, with ink shut-off value for travel.

3. Pelikan Souverän M800 & M400: The original and smoothest piston-filling mechansim, combined with classic design and buttery smooth nibs. The M800 series is a full size pen (1.7mL capacity) with an 18k gold nib. The M400 series, with less weight (holds 1.3mL) and a 14k gold nib, is the popular choice for smaller hands. Pelikan nibs write wider than most other brands.

4. Sailor Professional Gear: This series offers a wide range of 21K gold nib options, known for their precise writing performance and hint of pleasurable feedback. Smaller hands prefer the Pro Gear Slim, available in seasonal colours. Compatible with Sailor cartridges (1.0mL) or converter (0.7mL).

5. LAMY 2000: A unique hooded 14k gold nib offers a distinct writing experience, paired with a sleek and minimalist design incorporating a 2mL piston mechanism. Beautifully machined. Write wide and wet.

6. Pilot Custom 74: A conservative design, with a small 14k gold nib, that we think is the smoothest gold nib of all brands. Lots of nib size choice. Use with Pilot cartridges (0.8mL) of Converter 70 (1.1mL).

7. Sailor 1911 Standard: This is a small, lightweight, almost indesctructible fountain pen, with a firm 14k gold nib, that suits most hands when used posted. A true workhorse for long writing sessions. Option for the 1911 Large if you prefer not to post the cap on the end of the pen body. Compatible with Sailor cartridges (1.0mL) or converter (0.7mL).

As with any pen, the best for you will depend on writing style, preference for nib size and material, budget and intended use.
