PILOT Metal Falcon Fountain Pen (14ct Gold Rhodium Plated Nib, Con-70) - Brown
A pen that responds to you
The Pilot Falcon is for people who want a bit more character in their writing without losing control of it. The soft 14K nib responds to pressure in a way that feels natural rather than dramatic. It writes normally at light pressure, then opens up slightly when you lean into it.
What sets it apart
- Soft, beak-shaped 14K gold nib with controlled flex behaviour
- Responds to pressure, opening the line without needing heavy force
- Allows subtle line variation while still staying precise
- Slightly heavier metal body helps steady the hand
- Uses Pilot’s CON-70 converter for high ink capacity
Feel in the hand
With the Falcon, line variation is always intentional. You feel it when the nib starts to open, and you feel it again when you ease off. It’s not about dramatic flex writing, it’s about small, controlled shifts in pressure that show up immediately on the page.
Who it’s for
- Writers who want line variation without committing to full flex
- People exploring softer gold nibs for the first time
- Sketchers who use pressure to build expression
- Users who prefer a slightly heavier, more stable pen in hand
Not for
- People expecting vintage-style flex performance
- Writers who prefer very light pens
- Heavy handed writers who naturally press too hard
Practical tips
Start light and increase pressure gradually on downstrokes. Release pressure cleanly on the upstroke to get the finer lines. Most people rush this part at first, but the Falcon responds best when you learn when to lift.
FAQs
Is this a flex pen?
No. It’s a soft nib that gives controlled line variation rather than true flex behaviour.
Is this the same as the Pilot FA?
No, the FA is a different Pilot nib on some Custom series pens. FA provides a more flexible behaviour and a wider line range, but also has a steeper learning curve.Â
What’s the difference versus the resin Falcon?
The metal version is heavier, slightly larger, and uses the higher capacity CON-70 converter.
What's the most popular nib size?
SEF is the easiest to get noticeable line variation from, however the SF is a good balance between line variation and nib glide.
Is it suitable for everyday writing?
Yes, if you write with a light touch. It offers a good balance between usability and expression.
How do I avoid railroading?
Ease into each stroke rather than forcing sudden pressure changes. Use a steady stroke, increasing pressure gradually and at a moderate pace of writing. Wet inks work best.
Can it be used for sketching with waterproof inks?
Yes. We have many customers using it with waterproof fountain pen inks (eg. Pilot Tsuwairo, De Atramentis Document). Artists also use the top side of the nib to block in and shade.Â
