WINSOR & NEWTON Professional Watercolour - 14mL - 263 French Ultramarine (PB29)
French Ultramarine is a rich transparent blue. It was created by French chemist Guimet in 1828 as a synthetic but chemically identical alternative to the expensive pigment derived from Lapis Lazuli.
It is a classic warm blue prized for its richness, versatility and beautiful granulating character. Part of the Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour range, it produces deep, luminous washes that can be diluted to delicate sky tones or layered for dramatic depth.
Its subtle red undertone makes it particularly valuable for mixing vibrant violets and natural shadow colours, while its characteristic granulation adds texture and visual interest to landscapes, seascapes and atmospheric paintings.
A staple on professional palettes, French Ultramarine offers excellent transparency, strong tinting strength and reliable lightfastness. It is especially renowned for creating some of the most useful neutral mixtures in watercolour, particularly when paired with warm earth colours such as Burnt Sienna. Whether used on its own or as a key mixing colour, French Ultramarine brings depth, character and versatility to almost any painting style.
