Where you line stops being static

The Pilot Falcon is for pen lovers who want their handwriting and sketching to carry more character, but without sacrificing control. The responsive soft gold nib creates an experience that feels deliberate and quietly expressive. You can write at normal speed or control line width through hand pressure. A very versatile nib to explore.

Why you’ll love it

  • Iconic, beak-shaped 14K gold nib, feels soft and bouncy
  • Engineered to write at normal speed or open slightly under pressure
  • Widens your line while maintaining precision
  • Metal barrel adds weight and steadies your hand as you write
  • Uses a larger converter, to help with laying down more ink

How it makes you feel

The Pilot Falcon you are aware that every variation in line width is under your control. It isn’t vintage flex, but instead a soft flex, built for real writing.

Who it’s for

  • Writers who want line variation without mastering full flex
  • Fountain pen users exploring different gold nib profiles
  • Sketchers who value responsive, pressure based control
  • Those who prefer a slightly heavier, more grounded pen

Who it’s not for

  • Those expecting dramatic vintage flex
  • Users who prefer ultra light pens
  • Heavy handed writers (this pen needs a light hand)

Ink pairing suggestions

  • Pilot Iroshizuku inks (designed for the Pilot nib and feed)
  • Slightly wetter inks to enhance responsiveness
  • Usually Japanese brands, in more saturated colours

Practical tip

Start light, then gradually increase pressure on the downstroke to open the tines. Release pressure on the upstroke to create the wispy lines. Many users miss this second step, but it's where the Falcon comes alive.

FAQs

Is this a flex pen?
No. It’s a soft nib designed for controlled line variation, not true flex.

Is this the same as the Pilot FA?
No, the FA is a different Pilot nib on some Custom series pens. FA provides a higher degree of flex, but also has a steeper learning curve.

What’s the difference versus the resin Falcon?
The metal version is heavier, slightly larger, and uses the higher capacity CON-70 converter.

What's the most popular nib size?
SEF is the easiest to open the tines and create some drama, however the SF is a good balance between line variation and nib glide.

Is it suitable for everyday writing?
Yes, if you write with a light touch. It offers a good balance between usability and expression.

How do I avoid railroading?
Give the nib a warning about what's coming next. Use a steady stroke, increasing pressure gradually and at a moderate pace of writing. Use a light hand and wetter inks that can keep up with demand.

Can it be used for sketching with waterproof inks?
Yes. We have many customers using it with waterproof fountain pen inks (eg. Pilot Tsuwairo, De Atramentis Document). Artists also use the top side of the nib to block in and shade.
