Papers built to handle wet media

As you start to use your pens beyond text, you need a paper that can withstand more liquid. Strength comes from paper thickness, paper treatments (sizing) and fibre type. As a general rule, use 150-200gsm thickness for pen and ink, and 250gsm+ for watercolour. Choose a cold press surface to showcase pigment or a smooth hot press surface for working in detail or with fine line pens. Spiral covers are easy to fold back, but a stitched binding is better for working on a double page spread. The most popular for travel and fountain pen sketching are Stillman & Birn Alpha softcovers and Global Hand-Book. Watercolour sketchbooks with cotton paper take longer to dry, providing more time to adjust your work.
