Pads & Blocks
Paper is one of the artist's most important considerations and as a general rule thicker paper, with more cotton content, can withstand the most hammering. For watercolour, choose a weight of around 200gsm and a paper labelled watercolour, as this means it will be "sized" with gelatin to keep the paint on the surface. Cold press papers have texture to better show off pigment granulation and hot press is lovely and smooth for fountain pen and fineliners. Most popular watercolour paper is Arches 100% cotton, made in France, available in glued blocks, pads and full size sheets. Best value brand is White Nights. Entry level brand is Arto which still includes a 100% cotton option.
