FAQ

  • What does "fude" mean? It Japanese for "brush" and just like a brush, it requires a looser wrist.
  • Is it hard to learn? It feels unusual for about 10 minutes, then it clicks.
  • Can I still write with it? Yes. It is easier to write with the 40 degree nib than the 55 degree nib.
  • Can I travel with this? Yes, it's designed for that.
  • Will it leak? Usually no. Avoid extreme heat (hot cars).
  • Can I take it on a plane? Yes, keep it completely full or empty. Store tip up.
  • What nib size is best for sketching? The 40 degree nib is easier to learn, and the 55 degree gives more variation and character.
  • Are spare nibs available? No, but the pen is fairly low cost.
  • What is the converter for? Insert the converter where the cartridge normally goes, and turn the converter handle to suck up ink from the DA bottle.
  • What is the syringe for? It can be easier to fill the converter outside of the pen using the syringe.
  • How do I clean it? Flush with water every couple of months or if you change ink colour. Use the pen every couple of weeks to keep it flowing nicely.
  • What if the nib feels dry? Do a quick dip of the tip into water or clean the pen.
  • What's the best paper? Sketchbooks with smoothish paper (cold or hot press, not rough). We like Stillman & Birn Alpha.
  • Can I use other inks? Yes. Any fountain pen ink. We think De Atramentis is the best waterproof ink or any Japanese brand for a soluble option.
  • What else should I carry in a simple outdoor kit? See our Urban Sketching Kit.
