ARCHES Watercolour is a premium paper made in France from 100% cotton.

Available in 3 finishes - rough, medium (cold press) and smooth (hot press).

Available in 2 paper weights - 185gsm and 300gsm.

Best formats for travel sketching are pads (which are gummed on the short side) or blocks (gummed on 4 sides).

There is no right or wrong format - it's finding what suits your style and sometimes when you buy a 'mistake' you learn some new techniques!  Always go heavier weight if you use a lot of water. Beginners watercolour artists will like the medium surface (300gsm) in A5 or A4 which gives some texture for the paint to grab. Beginner colour pencil artists will like the medium (185gsm). For pen & ink or sketching, try the smoother hot press surface in either weight. A rough surface is great for texture and expression, but not for details. 

The block format holds the paper in shape while wet. The glue edge is black in colour and remains that colour after separation.
